SA 312 UNS S31254 cold hardens considerably faster than conventional austenitic grades. In complicated cold forming operations, intermediate annealing of the material may sometimes be necessary, especially if the pipe is welded. ASTM A312 UNS S31254 is well suited for welding, and the conventional methods used for welding austenitic steels can be used. However it is somewhat more sensitive to hot cracking in connection with welding, due to its stable austenitic structure and generally welding should be performed using a low heat input.
